Hi babymax! Do not let that can of Cesar fool you...It says 8% protein, but that is not accurate. You have to convert it to a Dry Matter Basis in order to know how much protein he's actually getting. You do this by taking 100 minus the amount of moisture listed which is usually around 80. You get 20 here. Then you take the amount of protein listed which was 8 and divide by 20. That comes out to 40% protein!! Way too high for a liver compromised dog.
They refuse food when they're not feeling well. If he eats around 1 cup of food per day, it should be split up into as many meals as possible. In one of the articles in the liver shunt and mvd group, Dr. Center recommends at least 4-6 small meals per day to lighten the load on the liver and increase their protein tolerance which is important in the long run.
Do you give any of the supplements like Denosyl or Milk thistle? Also, do you give fiber? This would be very helpful for your baby. It will help him tolerate the protein better. One source of fiber that has helped many liver compromised dogs is called BioPectin, and I believe you can buy it at Whole Foods.
With these small changes, you should see a difference in him. Small, frequent (4-6) meals per day. Add water to each of the meals. I know you already give lactulose and it sounds like that's going well. Also, the denosyl and milk thistle that I think you already give as well. The BioPectin will help big time too.
If he's refusing the Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14, then definitely get a prescription for the canned L/D.
If you want to homecook, I would seek out a nutritionist that has extensive experience with liver disease.
