I would suggest keeping your dog in a playpen for a while (about 6 months) and then moving to gating in a room (about 6 months) and then when they are over a year letting them have more freedom. It's not fair for the dog to get yelled at a lot. Also if your husband is worried about the carpet hopefully he won't yell at the dog and scare it. A co-worker of mine had a little poodle and her husband would yell at it when it peed and the dog was so scared of him that one day he went to give it a bath because it had pooped and had some poop stuck to him and I think the dog was just so scared of him that the dog literally had a heart attack and died!!! He was carrying him into the bathroom and had not even turned on the water yet and he went limp. I think the dog was scared to death of her husband!
