I'm having knee surgery next month (maybe sooner as the pain is getting ridiculous). I have cartiledge damage too and a meniscus problem after an injury (everyone thought it was just sprained until I went for an MRI  ). No mention of PT yet, but I'm sure there will be. She walked on crutches out of the hospital, but she is in quite a bit of pain still. She will be out of sports for 3 months, but should be off crutches in about 4 weeks. Good Luck with your surgery !
