Thanks for your help. The Maxtor drive is connected via ethernet cable to my wireless modem/router. I tried power cycling the network to see if it would come back, but not. I made some other changes, primarily switching Vonage's set up for internet to PPPoE and disabling DHCP. I went ahead and got a non-network backup drive and hooked it up via Firewire cable. It shows up on My Network Places just fine, as does all of my USB/Firewire devices. I suppose I could hook up the Ethernet external drive with Firewire cable and see if that works.
