I think playing it safe is the best idea. I would get him a life jacket just in case. You could try finding a place in your area that has swimming for dogs so he can try it out before you go. There are usually a few places that have dog swimming. I haven't taken my babies yet but want to. I think one would be scared and the other one would just love it.
