Usually the heat lasts for 21 or so days and it is always best to keep them separated during this time.
Even when you are ready to breed them, they will still need to be kept separate and they should be held during the ties so the female doesn't pull away and hurt the male.

I will check her "area", she is napping now. Haven't seen any discharge yet.
