This will probably be difficult because they do need to be separated while she is in heat. She is too young (18 months or 2nd heat is the earliest most breeders would breed a female...the bigger the dog, like Great Danes, the longer it takes them to mature and the longer you should wait to breed them).
Is her "area" swollen?
Any sign of discharge?
Usually the heat lasts for 21 or so days and it is always best to keep them separated during this time.
Even when you are ready to breed them, they will still need to be kept separate and they should be held during the ties so the female doesn't pull away and hurt the male.
