Putting a pee pad in the crate is a bad idea - a crate should always be their den, their bed. They instinctively don't pee in their bed. If you get them comfortable going against their instinct, you will have a horrible time training. Since you will be gone most of the day, I'd suggest getting a play pen/exercise pen. Put his bed at one end and the pee pad at the other end. That way he will have more room to run around while you are not home.
