Icon2 Wire Crate/ Kennel Training Suggestions

Chewie has a little pet carrier that he never pays attention to. I've moved it around to multiple different places and he could care less about it. When I put him in it he just barks and yelps forever. I'm going back to work in 2mo. and I have to get him trained to stay in a crate. Do I need a bigger one so he doesnt feel so confined? I'm in the process of pee pad training him and I want to make this decision soon so I can train him to go on the pee pad in the crate. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Am I going about this the wrong way? What's the best method for training to prepare him for when no one is home for 2/3 of the day?
