Most breeders retire their gals when they are 5 or 6 years old depending on the whelping history of the bitch. I feel that 8 years old is too old to continue to breed. There are often problems with defects and singletons as well as whelping complications. I wouldn't want to have a baby at 50 - 55 years of age and I've chosen to not put my dogs through that either.
