We learned this way also. Our trainer also told us to keep the treat close to you and when they are reaching for treat, reach out slowly and just stroke their back. We practice this with Hot Rod alot so he can get a positive experience with "come". We just call him over and give treat with stroke just because to get him used to coming to us. In the case he does run when I call him, I turn the other way and it usually does the trick. Good luck!
