You can use newspaper, but it needs to be placed on plastic to keep moisture from going through. Or you could just place newspaper on a disposable pad and throw away soiled paper. I thought I was the only one who even got the newspaper anymore. I started training Joey to go outside, but use the pads for convenience. I didn't want to get up in the middle of the night and go outside, so the pads are great, and also just in case I ever have to leave the little darling. I agree with the others that washable pee pads are best, I made my own, but several people on YT make great pads that you can purchase. I don't think it's that hard to teach them to go outside and use the pads, dogs by nature just seem to want to go outside. Take them out first thing in the morning and after meals, they will learn to go.
