I used pee pads when we first brought Pookie home. And yes, you do need to use something that has a backing on it so it doesn't leak through and go everywhere. Just as soon as Pookie got adjusted to being home with us I took the pee pads away and just took him outside frequently. It was hard because it was in the winter and he didn't want to go out. But... we made it. He's 5 mo now and has very few accidents. He waits until I take him out. I didn't want him to get accustomed to peeing inside, so he didn't have them very long.
