If you use a pen & pee pads then I suppose it is fine to have a water bowl in the pen....especially if your pup is in there for long lengths of time. I only use a crate because I have my pup with me most of the time and I do not put water in the crate, one because he is only in there for a short length of time and two because I don't want to add any fluid to his bladder to make the time in the crate more uncomfortable for him. I know that I was told not to put any water or food in the crate when you train them to sleep in the crate at night for the same reasons.
