IMO If you're crate training him, he should stay in the crate and you will just have to ignore the cries..which is really hard. If you're not going to crate train him anymore, then bed is ok. But I think you will be confusing him and giving him the wrong idea, that if he barks, or cries, he'll get what he wants.
