My dad has a herniated disk in his lower back as well. He first started having problems with it maybe 10 years ago. He too was told that surgery was the only option. He went to a chiropractor instead and to this day, he still has not had the surgery. I was too young (12 at the time) to really know all the details about what the chiropractor did, but whatever it was, it worked for my dad. 90% of the time since, he hasn't had a problem with it...I can count on one hand the number of flair ups he's had with it.

By no means am I saying the chiropractor will save him from surgery...but I am trying to give you hope that maybe there is another option for your boyfriend. I would definetly go see a chiropractor and at least get an opinion from him.
