Sounds like genetically he is just going to be a bigger dog. You are doing the right thing controlling is food intake. Also, some dogs get their full growth early and then just stop.
My puppies grow like crazy until they are around 10 weeks, and then everything slows way down and they get their full growth by about 7 months. Other dogs keep growing longer. Its always a wait and see.
