Feel his sides at the rib cage, is there an indentation between the end of the rib cage and the beginning of the hips? If he is one long sausage, he is probably a little over weight. He is old enough to move to adult dog food which has a little less fat content. He may not like it as well, so may eat less.
I hope you are using kibble (dry food), it is so much better for their teeth and mine don't gorge themselves on it like they might on wet food.
