Have you tough about give them a very nice book?? or a few books like in a "gift basket or something?" most people enjoy reading something well put together... if they have access to more educative resources it may change their behavior towards the dog, and instead they may start to try new things... they may be frustrated over the "potty" i would be, but if they find out the dog is able to learn and do more they may get excited enough to try new things... "even an old dog can learn new trick" if you know what i mean
