I think it is how the dog is raised.. and the circumstances.
We had a german shepherd when I was a baby/toddler named Boots. Family legend goes he attached himself to me when I was born, slept by my crib guarding me, once I was older my mom could say, go get Nikki, and he would run and herd me into my mother. A big old sweetheart. Within the last few years I read an article that said the number one dog bites of children- german shepherds. I kind of wrote it off as families are probably just more likely to own them making it statistically more probable. I don't really know but the one thing that always worries me about pits is that I've always heard they were bred for fighting. It seems unrealistic to expect a dog to be completely different than what we humans in all our wisdom have bred them to be.
