You are such a good and caring person. Its a blessing that you have this puppy and it looks like the puppy's mommy thought so too. I just couldn't help being sad and delighted at the same time because the intelligence of these animals are astounding!
From your description, the puppy's mommy knows that she is unable to care for her puppy, sensed that you are a caring person to be feeding a stray and thought that her puppy is best left at your care. She wants to be close to her puppy since she's been around but doesn't want to be too close to tempt her puppy from coming back to her. Poor mommy, I hope someone finds her and gives her a loving home because she definitely deserves it, if you can find her again, please send her to a rescue that can help rehome her! If I live close enough to you, I would definitely be there to help you out!!!
