When I got Basil, I learned very quickly to walk without lifting my feet. That still wasn't always enough. If you haven't done it already, get your pup a cat collar with a bell.
Although I would never use a leash with a collar on him (always use a harness), it still gives me fair warning when he's in the area! I hear that little bell in my sleep!
