I heard someone close to the situation say that they do the best they can for their horses and just pray that something like this won't happen. They are working on special surfaces to prevent such tragic events. My thought to that was, "Why expose a horse to such risk? What is the point of racing if it means this as a result?" I think it is cruel risk wise, no matter how much wonderful care they receive in the preceding years.
