I think canine companionship definitely provides something that we can't. Eddie's personality changed when we got Jack. And Jack's changed a lot when we got Rusty. It wasn't all good in the beginning, by my viewpoint, but in the long run it made them all better, more social dogs.
That said, I don't think there's anything wrong with a one-dog household if that works best for you. Dogs adapt to their environment, and they can be perfectly happy being the center of attention.
