My vet always has me start a half dose of Pet-Cal (calcium, Vitamin D and phosphorous) for the last month of the pregnancy and increase it to a full dose for nursing until weaned. The trick is to make sure the calcium receptors are full, but not overloaded so that when you stop giving the calcium the mom's body goes back to producing the calcium she needs on its own. I crush the tablet and mix with a tablespoon of cottage cheese or even whelping pudding. Then give her regular food for her meal. The full dose is split in half (morning and night).
We've never had a problem with moms or babies.
