I also had to try that on a runaway yorkie several years ago!! She wouldn't come back though until I also started running BACK to my house like there was the biggest prize gonna be waiting for me! She came running right back because she didn't want to miss anything!! I don't want to rely on that, but it does actually work.
So glad you kept your wits about you. Now just refuse to ever take the trash out again.
