I felt the same way when we had Cricket neutered in January! It was awful for me--I've never given him over to anyone before. I felt like I was abandoning him to an alien environment where, from his perspective, strangers would do alien things to him. Cricket is my first dog, too, so it was a huge deal for me.
I think this is sort of funny now, but I even took a sick day from work, "just so I could be there in case."
Here's the thing though, friend: The dog really didn't care. He was excited when we picked him up, and that night he was basically acting normal. Our only challenge was to keep him from running around like always.
My guess is that it's probably bothering you more than it is your fur-kid. So take heart--it's all okay!
