I think when you have an almost perfect fur-kid, and things are always going along just right, it's even harder to accept when things are totally out of sinc. I've had fosters that had nails so long they were curled under and into the pads. It took a few months of trimming but they ended up just fine.
Maybe you could re-train layla to accept the nail clipping again by making it fun and with treats. See is she then would be ok with a very coarse emery board to just file on them each week after a bath. That's what I do because I'm too afraid of cutting the quick with the clipper.
