I'm just learning too. Many people have used this program Photoscape - Download but I'm not sure that makes a difference. I know it's probably more important that the file you upload is within the YT limits. I tried to upload too big of a file once and it didn't move. It will tell you the size on the page that you upload your avatar. I think it's around 125 pixels and 48 megabits whichever is smaller. Does it move on your computer? You could try uploading it on the test forum, as an attachment, and I could check it for you.
