Well, I have dealt with the same issue and there is no way of keeping hawks away. I have called DNR and asked multiple times and finally talked to a man who said this. He doubts very highly a hawk would pick up Bella or Diggy with It being spring many many babies around for them to eat. Mine also have benn dive bombed but that is a scare tactic used as they think dogs are also hunting. Not sure if I thrust this but its the best I have as hawks are a protected speicies and you cannot hurt them. He also suggested a few scare crows in the yard posing as people. Good Luck. Oh and he did tell me this....If you see and EAGLE run! they are VERY capable and are known for preying on small dogs and cats. We have a few Eagle nests on the river by my house and we have actually has an Eahle in the back yard swooping thru. He didnt appear to be hunting more just checking things out and flying thru but they are HUGE and POWERFUL! Hope that helps. It may also help if you know they type of Hawk it is many hunt in different ways. Where do u live? What did the hawk look like? If its a Copper or Harris Hawk they are WAY more aggressive than say a Red Shoulder.
