Keep in mind how agile cats are. They can run and jump up out of the way or stand their ground and smack the dog with a good "thump" but not using claws. I have three cats, two Yorkies and a Lhasa-poo. MacTavish, 16 month old Yorkie, puts the run on one of the cats sometimes but Matt T. Cat just runs and jumps to safety. The other two just sit down and say "you've got to be kidding". If the cat you are interested in adopting is used to dogs then I doubt you would have any problems. Initially the cat will hiss and the dog will bark but within a short time I am sure they will respect each others' space. In the last 25 years of having both cats and dogs, I have never had a problem. Best of luck!
