Exclamation Keep An Eye on Your Yorkie at Parties!

Since we try to take Yoda everywhere we go, it was natural for us to take him to a dinner party my parent's friends were throwing. Of course, since we are the "younger ones," nobody listens to us when we tell them to NOT FEED Yoda ANYTHING!

So the main course was beef and ham, both very salty foods. Yoda was fine, laying right next to us as we ate on the couch, but he quietly slipped away when we were not looking. While engrossed in conversation, we didn't notice Yoda was gone for a few minutes. By that time, we knew he was begging someone for food. And that darn Yoda is just too cute when he begs, he looks at you with his best pathetic face, and paws at your legs/knees for something, anything (even when he's full!). Despite our earlier warnings, someone caved in and gave him some meat, probably too much as well. I was later told that the lady said that, "Oh our dog eats anything, it'll be okay for him." UGH! I respect my elders and all, but that just ticks me off!

When Yoda came back to us, he drank a LOT of water, and we could tell he'd been given too much salty foods. Thus, though he is potty trained, he later couldn't hold it and peed on their carpet, which embarassed us quite a bit (luckily, the condo owners were nice and didn't mind it at all). In retrospect, it was probably my fault I didn't notice his signs he wanted to pee, but we did take him out to pee about 30 minutes prior.

But that's not the last of it, because for THREE DAYS afterwards, Yoda had trouble pooping. He had diarrhea, and he would wake us up maybe 4-5 times a night to want to go poopy, but he just couldn't do it. He would squat and push and push and push, but nothing would come out, and he'd look all sad and come back in. Yoda sometimes doesn't chew his food all that well, and I would have thought that he was only give meat, but perhaps he had something hard to eat as well. So the poor guy had something stuck in his stomach which he couldn't poop out for three days! We felt so sorry for him, but we couldn't do anything about it. He FINALLY was able to push it out one night, and it was a big clump of something. But at last he was okay and all is well. Interestingly enough, he was okay during the day for the most part, and he only tried to poop it out at nights.

So moral of the story is to please keep a close eye out for your Yorkies when people are over or when you bring them somewhere. We're going to be bringing his car seat with us when we go to dinner parties with Yoda and we're going to feed him first, then strap him to the cushioned car seat and place him near us, thus making SURE no one else feeds him anything. If someone feeds your Yorkie something unapproved by you, YOU or your Yorkie may be paying for it later on!
