Well...I give wormer just as a precaution as well. It's just the way I was taught by my mentor. I've also read and heard from a couple vets that most puppies and kittens are actually born with a roundworm infestation, even if the mother doesn't have them.
 
The fecal sample is an idea, but I don't usually have them vet checked unless I'm shipping them or suspect a problem...so it's just easier for me to worm. I've never had a problem with it, nor has my mentor. So yep, everybody does things differently!! =) 
Anyways, I used Pyrantel and Panacur...and Albon for coccidia...
