In vet school, they typically spend very little time on nutrition. Nutrition is a completely different field.
If you don't want to go with a Hill's product, Royal Canin makes a food called Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14 which is also specifically for liver compromised dogs. Almost every dog that I have known has loved this food and NO ethoxyquin.
