You may or may not be aware, but miners used to use have canaries go into mine shafts to make sure the air was safe from dangerous gases.
I'm afraid the only alternative is to cage the bird and open a window.

Something else worth noting -
If allowed to overheat, non-stick cookware has been known to kill birds.
That's what I was thinking but I wasn't sure.
