I went ahead and googled on the topic and found this: Heartworm Prevention

but would like to know what rest of your experiences are?
Coming from MO, I was also surprised to learn that heartworm is not necessary in CA, BUT...the way the vet explained it to me...mosquitos carry the heartworm "disease", and as there are no mosquitos in CA (at least in SoCal where I'm at), there is no need to prevent against heartworm. My vet said he would recommend it, however, if you plan on travelling with your pet to other states where mosquitos/heartworms are a problem. That's my understanding of the situation anyway...
