My MIL had surgery to remove one about a year ago and since it was on a finger, the recovery was a "pain in the rear" (I can't imagine having a finger all splinted and bandaged where you can't use it!) but it's all good now.
Good luck on your surgery today. By the way, the book slamming thing cracks me up. I've never heard of it but hey, if it works for you, I say go with it. Not sure that I would try it though.
