I would say it will not harm him at all as long as is not too tight that it pulls his skin... but if that was the case, he wouldn't leave it alone as he did, so, I guess enjoy you luck!! You have a yorkie who does not mind a topknot!!!
I use orthodontical bands on my dogs, they are just tiny, veeeery elastic, and easy to cut at the end of the day...
Just be sure to take the top knot off once a day, brush and replace it...
