I looked up microchipping vs. tattoos and from the Purina website I found this:

However, tattoos have their drawbacks. The pet finder must look for the tattoo and understand the information. Tattoos can be obscured by hair or even altered.

And I looked at the NDR website, the registry for tattoing pets and in their q&a section, found this:
Quote:
Q. How long does a tattoo last?
A. If the proper equipment and procedure are used, the tattoo will last your pet's lifetime. Should a letter or number fade, your tattooer will touch it up for you free of charge. NDR recommends the use of special custom-designed tattoo equipment adjusted for your pet's skin. We do not recommend "tuna-can" shaped battery operated markers. They produce tattoos of varying (and often unacceptable) quality.

So now my concern about tattooing them is (1) it will fade and (2) it will need to be done again.
I dont know if I can bring myself to possibly put my dog through that twice.
