We had carpenter ants a few years ago - these are the bigger black ants but they aren't huge like I thought. They really are attracted to moist areas and our air conditioner unit was a window model and the moisture from that was getting down into the window sill and really attracted the ants. We were going crazy trying to figure out where the nest was, pulled apart cabinets and everything. Then we pulled back some of the sheetrock under the window and they went running everywhere! Yuck! It makes my skin crawl just thinking about it right now. There were literally hundreds of them. Prior to that, I would find 5 or 6 a day in the kitchen. Anyways, I found out that carpenter ants are not attracted to sugary things like other ants but to high fat items. I had a carton of soy milk in the cabinet and apparently it leaked so they were all really attracted to that too. What we eventually did, was spray the outside foundation just like an exterminator would do and we have had no problems since then. This was before we had Zoe though so I would caution you to be extra careful with your yorkies and keep them away from where you spray for awhile!
