Subaru Foresters are amazingly reliable. I have a 2000 and have never had one bit of problem, absolutely none. We got one after our other Subaru finally bit the dust after 13 years. The rods were knocking and the engine smoked and hubby was still able to drive it for over a month before we traded it in. That cars engine was repaired and is still on the road as we have seen it around town.
They have pretty good gas mileage, all wheel drive and they are making the newer ones bigger and not so boxy looking.
