Pick them up. Take no chances. I do not even trust my own big dog and I don't trust anyone. Don't forget our babies are terriers and they will start fights because they think they are big dogs. Big dogs have been known to attack yorkies while smelling them, because I was always taught that a yorkie is a "man made" dog and other dogs may not like them at all.
