Hmmm well if you did curtains with gray and tan/copper stripes then you could paint the walls a tan color and use the curtains and accessories to pull it all together. Or you could do a green with the gray which is still earthy just in a different (cooler) color palette. However, I like your initial idea of the darker gray. That would allow you to bring in colored accents.
