A young woman sat alone in a waiting room. She could hear her infant screaming as it was packed in ice. The baby had a fever off the charts and had had a series of seizures as a result. If the fever didn't break soon, the baby would surely die.
Things were not going well and the doctor treating the infant came out to talk to the young mother. His steps were slow and his heart was heavy. He hated cases like this. And he hated talking to the families worst of all.
Addressing the mother, he spoke as slowly as he had walked down the hall. He explained that the situation was dire. He carefully explained that the outcomes were bad (brain damage) or worse (death). It was less likely that the child would come out unscathed.
Well, miracles do happen. That scene was almost exactly 42 years ago and that baby was ME!
