No, crate training doesn't teach them to potty in their crate...it teaches them to hold their potty until you take them outside. I would use a playpen with a bed, food, water, safe toys and a puppy pad in there while you're at work. For crate training you put them in the crate with enough room to stand up, move around and lay down...then you take them out every half hour to hour at first, let them go potty, play for a little while and put them back in the crate. That teaches them to hold it as you extend the time in the crate as you go along. Always pairse them for a job well done and a little treat doesn't hurt wither. The rule of thumb is they can hold it 1 hour for each month of their age...so if your puppy is 2 months old they can hold it for about 2 hours, 3 months 3 hours and so on. Also, leave fresh water down at all times and if you schedule feedings you can just about know when they need to go poo...usually about 15 minutes after they eat. However, if your puppy is young I would leave food with them while you're at work so you won't have any blood sugar issues. There are some very good threads on here about crate training...you can use the search feature at the top of the page to find them...I think they will be helpful to you.
