To respond to a message someone sent you, you go to their profile page (you can click their name above the message they wrote you) and type it in the message box, click post message.
All the messages everyone sent them are one after the other in the order sent. If you want to read an entire conversation, whether it's between you and the person you responded to or someone else and that person, you can click view conversation to the right of each message.
