I would most defiinately homecook.
I think a nutritionist is very important in this situation because the diet has to be low phosphorue along with low protein (if that is how their vet feels it's best to feed a kidney patient).

If they absolutely can't homecook, I think I'd stick with the prescription or ask a nutritionist to help find a better food with compatible ingredients.
