Drop ears are a recessive trait so a dog that has them is homozygous recessive that them. They can also be caused by failure to keep the hair trimmed causing the cartiledge to break. If two dogs that come from a flop eared bitch are bred there is a chance that one out of four of their pups would have flop ears even if both parents have erect ears. Personally I would not line breed and double up on any dog that is not a champion or at least AKC pointed.
