I trained Esme on the pads. She was almost perfect by 4 months. I NEVER left her unsupervised. If I couldn't watch her for one second I stuck her in pen (baby play pen). In there was her bed and a pad. It was a small area so she couldn't really miss the pad.
When I was with her, I would put her on the pad every 15-20 minutes. I would NOT let her get off until she peed. I would say 'Esme, do your business.' This was REALLY time consuming and sometimes I would be at the pad for like 30 minutes. She would walk off, I would put her back on. When she would pee, I would get really excited and say 'Yes, good girl! You did your business!' and give her a 1 peanut butter Captain Crunch cereal.
I was VERY consistent. I ignored her mistakes UNLESS I caught her in the act. Then I would clap my hands say 'no' and pick her up and put her on the pad.
I then bought her a much LARGER x-pen where she had room to play and had to walk to the pad to do her stuff.
At 6 months, I got rid of the pen all together and now Esme stays free while we are at work.
Pee pad training really worked for us and it can work for you. You just have to be really consistent. Keep your eyes on her at all times and when you can't watch her keep her confined to a small space.
Good Luck!
