The size of the litter is determined by how many eggs are fertilized and by the mother's capacity to carry them. The timing of the tie is therefore more important than the number. Fresh sperm is required at the time that the eggs are mature which is usually 2 -3 days after ovulation. For most of my gals that's about 10 days into their estrus. The more pups that mom must carry does influence the size of the pups when born but birth weight doesn't always correspond with adult weight.
